Teams from all over the globe are taking part in the world’s biggest student motorsport event at Silverstone.

The global competition, run by the Institution, is the world’s largest student engineering event and challenges student engineers to design, build and race a single seat racing car in one year.

Formula Student Project Leader Lucy Killington said: “We are looking forward to a fantastic, keenly contested event.

“There will be tremendous innovation on show during Formula Student, with many of the competitors sure to have illustrious careers in engineering.

“It will also be a great atmosphere as friends and family of the competitors and fans are able to watch the competition unfold as well as enjoying our best ever ‘off track’ entertainment offering, with live music, driving experiences and exhibitors throughout the paddock.”

Dozens of Formula Student alumni have progressed to Formula 1, and hundreds more are now working at the world’s largest automotive firms, including Mahle Powertrain, Bosch and Jaguar Land Rover.

Ross Brawn, Managing Director of Motorsport for Formula One Management, is a Patron of the event.

He said: “What I find most appealing about Formula Student is the innovation that it encourages, as the competition rules give the entrants a lot of design freedom.

“Having worked my way up, I appreciate that to develop a good grounding in engineering, practical experience is essential.

“Formula Student combines hands-on practical applications with students’ academic studies, but also gives experience in vital skills such as budgeting, project management and team work.”

Teams from Denmark, Ecuador, Egypt, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, India, Ireland, Jordan, Mexico, Norway, Pakistan, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, The Netherlands, Turkey and the UK are competing in the four day event.

Engineering firm GKN will also be broadcasting some of the event live
