Awarded to a railway industry apprentice working / studying for, or towards, a Level 3 or Level 4 qualification. And an apprentice who can demonstrate outstanding commitment to their continuing development whilst also making a positive difference to their organisation and possibly the wider community.
Ideally the Award will go to an apprentice who has gone above and beyond their normal duties and taken on additional responsibilities, which may include charitable and voluntary work and encouraging young people to consider engineering as a career.

The winner and highly commended entrants will be featured in promotional activity in the form of case studies, photos and web stories.
Entrants must demonstrate:
Any charity or voluntary work is relevant, especially related to engineering and encouraging young people into engineering.
Apprentices must also outline a career plan for the next three to five years.
The winner will receive a prize of £1,000. Any highly commended entrants will receive a certificate.

This Award reflects the importance of apprenticeships to the rail industry and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. The prize is donated annually by Clive Hickman, president of the Institution 2024 – 2025.
