Engineering Council fees

An Engineering Council entry fee is payable if your application for registration with the Engineering Council is successful.

In subsequent years, your Engineering Council annual fee will be paid at the rate advertised for that year.

Engineering Council registration fees are paid in addition to your IMechE annual subscription.

Each year you will receive an IMechE subscriptions notice detailing both your Engineering Council registration fee, if applicable, and your IMechE annual subscription.

If you have a dual membership with another institution, you can continue to pay your EngC fees through them or you can transfer the payment to us. You will need to provide proof that your EngC fees have been paid to transfer payment of future fees to IMechE.

Subscription reductions and other support

We understand that as our members progress through their careers, there may be times when they may need more support to pay their membership fees.

If you are retired, a member on a lower income, or find yourself in altered financial circumstances we may be able to help.

You may also wish to consider setting up a monthly payment by Direct Debit. (Members with a UK bank account and UK address only).

To support refugee engineers recently arrived in the UK to feel part of, and gain employment in, the engineering community using their background in engineering, the IMechE has decided to waive membership application and subscription fees for up to two years for eligible potential members. Applicants who have official refugee status in the UK will have accompanying papers which will help us determine those eligible. Please email membership@imeche.org to receive information on qualifying criteria and an application form.

Retired members

If you have retired from full-time paid employment (i.e. working less than 16 hours per week) and are over 55, you may be eligible for a reduced fee.

A further reduction may also be possible if your income, including your pension, is less than £11,500 a year.

Reduced subscriptions for retired members

2026
Retired members £99.00
Reduced retired rate £49.00

Reduced fees for career breaks or altered financial circumstances

If you find yourself in altered financial circumstances and on an income of £18,000 a year or less, you may be eligible for reduced fees. You may qualify if your lower income is due to any of the following reasons:

  • Employment circumstances
  • Maternity or paternity leave
  • On a career break:

    • to be the primary carer for young (pre-school age) children
    • to care for a relative
    • due to an illness
  • Working outside the UK as a volunteer
  • In full time post-graduate study relevant to a career in engineering.

A voluntary career break, for example for travel or home renovation, would not normally meet the criteria for eligibility to receive a reduced fee, however, it may be considered in exceptional circumstances with supporting evidence.

If your reason for applying is not listed above, or your income exceeds the limits, your application will be referred to the Reduced Subscriptions Review Group for further consideration.

For international members who are employed and wish to apply for reduced subscriptions, you will need the signature of either your Managing Director, Finance Director, or HR Director to confirm your status. If you are unemployed, please indicate this on your application.

Engineering Council fees for reduced subscriptions and retired members

Professionally registered members (CEng, IEng and EngTech) who are eligible for reduced subscription fees also pay reduced Engineering Council fees.
