Associate Member (AMIMechE)

If you're a graduate with an undergraduate degree in a science, technology, engineering or maths (STEM) subject you can join us as an Associate Member.

You will unlock the next stage of your professional development, allowing you to begin working towards becoming a Chartered or Incorporated Engineer. This type of membership is designed to help you boost your career and achieve your ambitions.

Who is it for?

If you're a graduate with an undergraduate degree in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) subject you can join as an Associate Member. You will need one of the following:

  • An undergraduate degree accredited by us
  • UK undergraduate engineering degree
  • UK undergraduate maths, physics or other relevant science degree
  • International engineering degree that meets our academic requirements
  • Open University undergraduate degree of acceptable profile 

Unfortunately, qualifications that are not equivalent to a British bachelor's degree (Level 6) or above (such as HNCs, HNDs and Foundation degrees) do not satisfy the academic requirement for becoming an Associate.

How much does it cost?

Members pay an application fee and an annual subscription. 

Graduate Student Affiliates 

For Student Affiliate Members who both graduated this year and are based in the UK, the application fee charged to become an Associate Member is waived until the end of December. For international Members, this offer is extended until the end of February next year.

Reduced subscriptions

If you are not professionally active or your annual income is below £18,000 you may qualify for a reduced subscription.

Graduates with an undergraduate degree in a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) subject can join as an Associate membership. You will need to have one of the following:
  • An undergraduate degree accredited by us
  • UK undergraduate engineering degree
  • UK undergraduate maths, physics or other relevant science degree
  • International engineering degree that meets our academic requirements
  • Open University undergraduate degree of acceptable profile

Log in to your account

Before the online application opens you will be asked to sign into the website. If you do not already have a user and password you will be prompted to create an online account.

Complete the online application form 

The application form is divided into the following sections which must all be completed before submitting your application: 

1. Personal and employment details
This information can be updated in My Profile 

2. Education
You should have a scanned version of any academic certificates to hand as you will be prompted to upload these. 

Your undergraduate degree certificate must contain the following information: 
1. Qualification Award (eg BEng(H), MEng, etc) 
2. Awarding university 
3. Subject Title of award on certificate (eg Mechanical Engineering) 
4. Class or Result (eg 2nd Class Honours, Merit, etc) 
5. Date of award

If any of the above information is missing from your degree certificate, you will also need to upload a copy of your transcript/results.

If you have not received your official certificate, as you have recently graduated, then you will need to submit a letter from the awarding body confirming the information above.

We are unable to accept degree evidence that states - valid for online only or not an official copy.

All documents must be submitted in their original language and translated in English, if applicable.

There is a 4MB size limit for uploaded documents – anything over this will be rejected.

We have included a validation page that will highlight if any information is missing. You will not be able to submit your application for assessment if there are any incomplete sections.

Submit your application and pay

You will only be able to submit your application for assessment when all sections of the form have been completed. 

Once you have completed all sections of the form you will be asked to enter the details of your credit or debit card for the cost of the application fee – no other forms of payment are available at this time.

After you have entered your card details you will be prompted to press the ‘submit now’ button; this will simultaneously take your payment and send your application to the Membership Team.

You will receive an email to confirm the payment, keep this for reference, and another email to confirm that the application has been received. 

Your application will be checked by staff. You will be able to log in to your account at any time to check its progress. 

We will let you know if you have been approved

Once your application has been checked by us, you will be notified in writing of your election by email.
