ALARP 2024: Emerging Risks in Engineering

The ALARP principle is at the heart of UK Health and Safety legislation. Given ongoing innovation in technology and processes, it is critical that the standards and methods used to demonstrate ALARP are constantly challenged. Otherwise, companies risk significant financial, legal, and public backlash.

Attending ALARP 2024 will provide safety practitioners with the opportunity to learn how to apply best practice to ensure compliance and manage evolving risks. Case studies are drawn from a wide selection of industries, enabling attendees to learn from and network with a diverse range of peers.

This year, the event will include case studies from traditional high-hazard industries including nuclear and oil & gas, with additions from emerging industries and technologies. Experts in hydrogen, nuclear fusion, and electrification will share their experiences in developing safety cases.

This seminar will showcase case studies from engineering industry leaders applying best practice to practical demonstrations of ALARP. High-level discussions of the different methods used within this concept will compare the use of quantitative and qualitative approaches and the legal viewpoints attached to each.

Who should attend?

Attending this event supports your Professional Development; if you're an IMechE Member, this can be tracked in the Career Developer section of your online account.

Pre-seminar workshop: Risk Reduction and ALARP

Attend our pre-seminar workshop on 23 September 2024 on Risk Reduction and ALARP, which will cover the basics of the ALARP concept and demonstrating ALARP along with risk reduction through the project lifecycle. Take the opportunity to bring your own practical examples and questions from your workplace to share and discuss with your peers.

Take part in game-based learning activities which enable:

  • The effective communication of simple but very important safety messages across your workforce
  • The ability to deliver the messages in a memorable way, providing a long-term benefit to your business
  • The workforce to relate these messages to their specific roles, to ensure tangible safety improvement

How will I benefit?

Join this seminar to:
  • Gain in-depth insights into ALARP methodologies employed in a range of safety-critical sectors, highlighting key takeaways to use in their own work
  • Understand developments around the interpretation and application of ALARP
  • Develop the knowledge and skills needed to successfully apply the ALARP principle to 21st century engineering challenges
  • Mitigate and manage risks effectively to eliminate safety-critical events
  • Reduce your exposure to regulatory and legal penalties by understanding expectations and meeting them fully
  • Learn how to apply the principle appropriately and produce correct and robust ALARP demonstrations
