BRYAN HILDREW APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR 2016 RUNNER-UP: SAM HARRIS

Sam Harris is a Calibration Engineer for Ford Motor Company in Dunton. He is responsible for the human/machine interface for gasoline powertrains, which involves optimising the performance of prototype vehicles in a range of environments. During his apprenticeship he has done several placements in different department, broadening his knowledge of cars, the company and engineering as a whole.

Sam had always been keen to work in the automotive industry, and during his A-levels did work experience with Ford. This convinced him to join as a Higher Apprentice, rather than go to university. “I knew that this was where I wanted to work, so it seemed logical to join their apprenticeship scheme. I can still do a degree but have experience and no debt. For me, it wasn’t a hard decision and I definitely made the right choice.”

He set up the company’s Higher Apprentice Challenge, where GCSE students design and build a car to transport an egg towards a wall, and hopefully stop in time! Apprentices visit the schools, mentor the students and help them refine the design of their cars. The final is held at Dunton, and the prize on offer to the winning team is a week’s work experience. “I am always keen boost awareness of apprenticeships, and this raises awareness in pupils but also the teachers. I hope that this will encourage the pupils to look at engineering careers either with Ford or other companies.”

The IMechE is important to engineers and Sam has attended many events and activities. He is also chaired the first meeting of the Essex Young Engineers Panel, which he has recently set up in conjunction with the Institution and Essex County Council.  “Whilst in Ford we are lucky to have lots of applicants, there is a shortage of young engineers. I hope that by informing people about apprenticeships and encouraging professional registration we will increase the numbers.”

“It is an exciting time to work in the automotive industry,” explains Sam. “The increasing regulation on emissions will lead to further downsizing of engines and make electrification a key focus. Autonomous vehicles will also cause a paradigm shift in the industry. Ford is at the forefront of research and development in both these areas, which makes it a great place to work.”

Sam finishes his apprenticeship next year, and hopes to progress through engineering roles. He would be keen to do a foreign placement. “I am honoured to be recognised, and really pleased to be nominated by Sarah Haslam. I hope that the winners will continue to promote apprenticeships, so that we can use the publicity to encourage more young people to look into engineering careers.”
