Volunteer with us: Join our Membership Committees and Assessment Panels. Are you seeking a volunteer position to share your skills and expertise, contribute to your CPD and support the next generation of engineers?
The Institution is keen to engage and have input from members across the institution. The Membership, Accreditation and Professional Development department (MAPD) have a number of Committees and Assessment Panels which support the large variety of specialist assessment activities which are undertaken in order to enable the election of new members and all the supporting activities. All MAPD Committees and Panels report to the senior Board, the Qualifications and Membership Board (QMB). The QMB and the sub-committees have a strong ethos of enabling engagement from interested members who wish to volunteer. This is done through an on-going process of succession planning on all standing Committees. This allows for both the retention of experience and expertise, as well as periodic refresh to welcome new volunteers with relevant experience. Committees meet ca. 4 times per year, mostly virtually, using MS Teams. Typically new volunteers will be inducted by joining the Assessment Panel in order to learn the specific assessment tasks for which each Committee is responsible. Then, as positions arise annually, Panel Members may be invited to join the Committee. There are currently 5 Committees or Assessment Panels needing new volunteers. These are as listed below. This link will give you an overview of the 5 committees and panels looking to recruit new volunteers. A role description is also attached. Click on the links below to learn more about the specifics of the role and the commitment and time required.
Applications will be reviewed by the Chair, or Vice-Chair of the relevant committee. Applicants may be invited to have a teams discussion with the Chair or other experienced committee members. All roles are suitable for Chartered Engineers. Some roles are also suitable for Incorporated Engineers or Engineering Technicians. Please complete the Volunteer Recruitment Form and return this with an update to date CV or career precis to volunteer.recruitment@imeche.org
Serving on an IMechE committee is a two-way process: we give of our time to put something back into our profession; we also obtain both learning and pleasure in a collegiate context from the experience. We broaden the range of engineering we see, which is a useful way to keep up to date in developments outside of our immediate sphere. We meet interesting engineers from a deliberately wide range of industries and academic settings. This is also very useful CPD for each of us.
