Dr Sergio Hernandez joined the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in June 2024 as an Education & Skills Policy Advisor. Sergio joined the Engineering Education Policy team to develop the education and skills strategy for the Institution and support the Education & Skill Strategy Board.
Sergio obtained a PhD in Education Policy from the University of Glasgow in 2022. During his PhD, Dr Hernandez participated in numerous research projects with higher education institutions and international organisations to study the role of lifelong learning policies in building more cohesive education systems. Dr Hernandez has supported various cities worldwide in becoming part of the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities with a strong focus on STEM Education policies. He also has worked as an international policy consultant and researcher with the OECD and UNESCO.
Before joining the Institution, Sergio held a position as Policy & Programme Manager at the Natural Environment Research Council, working across the International Policy team and Talent & Skills, where he oversaw the implementation of research fellowships and grants to tackle global challenges such as global warming and climate change.
Sergio is originally from Mexico City and has a passion for data for good governance and education policies. He also shares the Institution's mission to make a better world through engineering.
