The Design Challenge gives students from universities and university technical colleges (UTCs) a taste of ‘real world’ engineering, challenging them to design, create, present and run a device to a strict technical specification.

The Challenge enables participants to gain realistic industry experience, practical employability skills and enhanced business and people skills, all within a set time frame. It is intended to complement the academic curriculum and may be used by participants towards their official projects, or alternatively as an extra-curricular activity.

The Challenge is open to teams of 2-6 students from universities or UTCs. Teams in the UK will compete in regional competitions from March to June, leading to a national final for the regional winners, hosted at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in London, at the start of the following academic year. If you are interested please get in touch at designchallenge@imeche.org.

Ansys Simulation Challenge – get involved in something new and exciting!

We are pleased to announce that the Design Challenge 2025 has an added element in the form of a Simulation Challenge in conjunction with our event partner Ansys.

This Challenge will run alongside the main competition and there will be regional finalists who will then compete at the national final too.

  • It is open to all levels of the competition
  • The simulation can be structural OR thermal OR fluid. Dynamic simulation (simulation of parts in motion) is not required.
  • Submissions:

    - 1-2 slide overview of model set up and boundary conditions (with assumptions and estimations.
    - Maximum 3-minute video (see video example) showing original simulation with results and then redesign with results.
    - The top submission from each regional heat will go through to the finals. Teams can update their video along with their designs to submit for the finals.
    - Submissions deadlines will be 1st April 2025
  • Prizes: Teams that reach the National Final will be in with a chance to win free Ansys Simulation Certification and the winning team will be featured in the global Ansys Blog.
  • Full details can be found here online.
