Events

The Young Members Committee of the IMechE Railway Division arranges multiple events and actively participates in activities organised by the Railway Division.

Railway Challenge

This is a key event in the Railway Division’s calendar with students, graduates and apprentices designing and building miniature locomotives, competing in different challenges at the Stapleford Miniature Railway. Each year, RDYM supports the event by sponsoring a social event involving a quiz and providing free pizza and drinks for attendees. This helps to spread awareness of our committee with the aim of recruiting potential future volunteers!

Young Engineers and Apprentices Rail Seminar

Our flagship event, this Seminar is a 2-day event which runs each winter, providing a combination of guest speakers, interactive activities and site tours.

The Seminar’s goals are to provide a welcome to the industry for new joiners and provide some new insights for those who are in the early stages of their careers.

The event provides an audience with senior leaders in the industry who new starters may not otherwise have the chance to network with and exposes them to new environments; many attendees will never have been to a depot!

Future of Rail Presentation Competitions

The Future of Rail Presentation Competitions is an annual Railway Division tradition. Young engineers and apprentices from all facets of the railway industry for their chance to win the grand prize of £1000 and a trophy at the HQ Finals!

This competition provides young engineers with the platform to showcase their presentation skills on a national stage. Entrants are expected to give a brief presentation on an engineering topic which is either of particular interest to them or they have been directly involved in.

After a series of regional heats, winners are invited to compete at a national final at the IMechE’s One Birdcage Walk Headquarters.

Prizes are provided to heat winners and national final runners up; the grand prize being £1000 to the winner of the national final.

Future of Rail Presentation Winners

2024 Winner

On Tuesday 30th April, the IMechE’s Railway Division held their annual ‘Future of Rail Presentation Competition Grand Final’ – which invites young engineers from around the country to present on work they’ve done, in front of industry leaders, and a panel of expert judges. Regional heats took place early in 2024, with the winners of each heat being invited to London, to present in the final, in the prestigious IMechE Lecture Theatre.

As all presenters in the final are winners of their respective heats, the quality of all the presentations was understandably high, and covered a very wide range of topics, from OLE systems, to the use of 3D digital imaging, and the development of an air cannon for windscreen impact testing to name just a few. But there can only be one winner.

Representing the Midlands Centre, Callum Nicholson, an undergraduate engineering student at the University of Birmingham, currently on a placement with Vanguard Sustainable Transport Solutions, was the 2024 winner. Callum’s presentation was titled ‘HydroSHUNTER: Designing Safe On-Vehicle Hydrogen Systems’, where he confidently covered the properties of hydrogen, the risks associated with it, and how these risks are being managed while designing a hydrogen powered shunter. Callum made excellent use of graphics and animations to help deliver his presentation, but his speaking style and ability to capture the attention of the room stood out on the day, and he event managed to get a few laughs from the audience. When being questioned by industry experts following his presentation he answered with great detail, and explained further around the use case of a hydrogen powered shunter, and where it would fit into the wider rail system, noting its limitations – and to quote an audience member, ‘I’ve been working with hydrogen for a number of years, and even I learned something during his presentation.’

An excellent presentation, and a well-deserved winner, congratulations Callum!

2023 Winner

Jonathan Prince represented the South Western Centre and won the 2023 Future of Rail Competition.

Jonathan’s presentation covered the process of designing, using and validating a tool called the Battery Train Network Simulator, and how it has been used to inform various existing and potential rail decarbonisation projects for Vivarail and now GWR. It focused on the motivation behind the development, some of its interesting capabilities, and how it is able to optimise solutions and provide reassurance on the operational resilience of battery powered trains. Through the explanation of the requirements and results of the simulator, the presentation provided an insight into some of the advantages and limitations of deploying battery train technology in the real world.
