WHO WE ARE

The Railway Division Young Members Committee is compromised of and acting on behalf of Young Engineers, from those already in Rail to school students who haven’t made their mind up yet on their careers.

We are principally comprised of graduates and apprentices from Train Operating Companies, Rolling Stock Owners, Manufacturers and the wider rail supply chain.

Tom Scott – Chair

Class 333 Fleet Engineer, Angel Trains

Tom is currently the Class 333 Fleet Engineer for Angel Trains, responsible for the day-to-day performance and technical management of the Class 333 fleet, ensuring performance, utility and condition of the assets is optimised in throughout their life cycle. Tom works closely with Northern and Siemens, representing the interests of the asset owner.

Tom joined the railway industry after graduating Sheffield Hallam University with a master’s degree in aerospace engineering. He was the successful applicant for Porterbrook’s graduate training scheme, where he worked in various roles, such as Class 170 fleet engineer, and Class 458 project engineer, before moving to Angel Trains in 2023, where he remains in his current role.

Tom achieved CEng status through the IMechE in 2022 and is a strong supporter of the IMechE graduate scheme, which led to his involvement in the IMechE, and the IMechE Railway Division Young Members. Tom won the North West heat of the Future of Rail presentation competition in 2020, progressing to the grand finale. Tom then joined the RDYM in 2020 as an ordinary member, before being elected as vice-chair, serving that position from 2021 – 2023. He hosted and was an organising member of a number of IMechE events, for both the RDYM and Midlands Centre. Tom was then elected as RDYM Chair for 2024 – 2025.

Tom is keen to promote engineering to prospective young engineers, as well as railway engineering to those considering the profession, having been involved in multiple STEM activities ranging from primary level, through college and university to young engineers in the industry.

David Pearce – Immediate Past Chair

David Pearce

345 Delivery Manager, MTR Elizabeth line

David is currently 345 Delivery Manager for MTR Elizabeth line, leading a team responsible for the daily delivery of a safe, clean and reliable fleet of 70 trains for the latest addition to London’s transport network in conjunction with maintenance supplier Alstom.

Graduating from Warwick University having studied Mechanical Engineering, David joined the Association of Train Operating Companies focussing on national fleet performance which ultimately led to a performance management role with Greater Anglia.

David progressed into more senior roles within the engineering team including Systems Engineering Manager and leading the ‘Business As Usual’ acceptance of the new fleet of Class 755 and 745 trains.

With this experience, David left for Heathrow Express to take on the role of Fleet Engineering Manager, acting as professional head of engineering during the withdrawal of the Class 332 and 360/2 fleets and introduction of Class 387 to HEx services.

David is Chair of the Railway Division’s Young Members Committee, having joined the committee in 2016 and having previously held the position of Vice-Chair and led on a number of successful IMechE events. A keen advocate of bringing young engineers into our profession, David is also an IMechE Mentor, working with the Rail Delivery Group’s Rail Engineering Graduate Scheme to help guide the next generation of leaders through their initial years in rail.

Fleet Support Engineer, TransPennine Express

Alice is a Fleet Support Engineer at TransPennine Express working on projects across all fleets. Currently one of the Vice Chairs of the committee, she is focusing on the development and introduction of the RDYM Buddy Scheme.

Senior Engineer, Transport for London

James has a background in Rolling Stock Engineering, his work has covered UK and International markets and includes the introduction of new fleets, the optimisation of maintenance and managing the commercial and technical aspects for operational Fleets. James now works as a Senior Engineer for Transport for London, where he leads Business Modernisation initiatives in areas such as Standards Improvement, Maintenance Optimization, Innovation and Asset Condition Information, with the overall aim to improve TfL’s ability to deliver its business objectives.

Senior Engineering Lead, Transport for London

Paul Burkitt - Gray

Paul Burkitt-GrayPaul works with London Underground’s operational readiness team, preparing the network for the entry to service of the new train fleet for the Piccadilly line. This includes developing the training programme for 650 Train Operators, and commissioning Platform Train Interface CCTV systems at 53 stations. His responsibilities also include the £600m Bank Station Capacity Upgrade, introducing a new platform for the Northern line, travelators, and a new station entrance with step-free access to the platforms.

Paul entered the railway industry via an apprenticeship with Transport for London, during which he undertook placements on projects including Crossrail and the refurbishment of the Jubilee, Central and Bakerloo line train fleets. He then spent two years as a project planner for the £5.4bn Four Lines Modernisation resignalling programme.

Paul has been a member of the Railway Division Young Members committee since 2019, with responsibilities including running the annual “Rail Trail” scavenger hunt and online quizzes during lockdown.

Aamina works as a Systems Engineer for Infrastructure Monitoring at Angel Trains, having joined the industry as part of their Engineering Graduate Scheme in 2021. She is also the Co-Chair for the Women in Rail London Region.

Ellie Smith’s railway experience to date has revolved around the UK infrastructure. As a result, She has worked on both HV and LV electrical power assets at Network Rail for the last 3 years.
