What inspired you to be an engineer?
Ever since I was little, I have loved problem solving and organising, and I feel an engineering role is a perfect combination of the two. I really enjoy the challenge of being able to work through a problem, deliver a solution and see it through to implementation.
What is your current role and what do you do?
I work for CNOOC International and I am currently the Onshore Support Mechanical Engineer for the Buzzard Platform in the North Sea. My role consists of supporting the mechanical discipline offshore and ensuring work is completed efficiently to support safe and stable operations.
Why did you become a Chartered Engineer with the IMechE?
I have always valued becoming a Chartered Engineer as a significant career milestone that I have wanted to achieve since university. The biggest driver is that it is a personal and professional demonstration that I have had my competence assessed, credentials verified and provides a framework to continue my CPD.
What support and advice did you get during the application and interview process?
I was incredibly well supported both internally by my mentor within CNOOC International and by the IMechE (a service I couldn’t recommend more). I attended webinars/workshops to support writing the application and the IMechE website has brilliant resources to aid in preparation for the interview as well.
How has your membership helped with your Continuing Professional Development (CPD)?
CPD is such a critical part of any engineering career as it supports the constant learning and improving cycle. I’ve taken advantage of the brilliant resources that the IMechE provides via its webinars, training and events. I am also an active STEM Ambassador across various local schools which I really enjoy.
How do you use the many member benefits that are open to you e.g. training, events, library, networking?
The resources that the IMechE provide as part of your membership are extensive and invaluable. The events I have attended have all been interesting and informative whilst being great for networking. The library is a fantastic source of knowledge and I regularly use it for reference within my role.
How has being a Chartered Engineer helped you in your career?
Becoming a Chartered Engineer was a huge career and personal milestone for me. CEng develops network/career opportunities, and it is an honour to be recognised as a professional and competent engineer. Personally, becoming Chartered has enabled me to be the lead engineer on several work scopes, which has been fantastic for further development.
What has been your greatest career achievement so far and what are your future career goals?
Becoming Chartered was definitely a major career achievement however another achievement was travelling to China alone to take part in a training delivery course and winning an award. For the future, I would love to continue working to support offshore assets, both onshore and offshore, potentially working towards OIM.
What advice would you give developing engineers?
The advice I would give to is to seize every opportunity. Make sure it is something that you can enjoy and take advantage of it. Regardless of the outcome, every opportunity for personal/professional development is priceless. Also, find a good mentor and apply for your Chartership – you won’t regret it!
