Dr Abimbola Oladokun has been awarded the 2019 Tribology Bronze Medal.

The Medal is the highest recognition in tribology issued by the IMechE Tribology Group to an early-stage career research engineer.

Dr Abimbola Oladokun was born in Ibadan, Nigeria in 1991. He was educated in the UK from his early teenage years. and obtained a Bachelors degree in Aerospace and Aeronautical Engineering at the University of Leeds (2010 - 2013). He developed a passion for research following his successful venture into understanding the mechanical and physical characteristics of the dragline spider silk.

His increasing interest into materials with biological applications led to a PhD in Tribocorrosion of Orthopaedic Implant Materials, also at Leeds University later in 2013. His research was part of a large FP7 EU funded project (Life Long Joint) set out to develop a silicon nitridecoating for orthopaedic implants. Upon completion of his PhD, he continued as a Post-doctoral Research Associate on the project till the project's completion in 2018.

In those five years, Dr Oladokun's research attracted multiple awards and recognition spanning across several societies and institutions at the Corrosion Science Symposium, IMechE Tribology Group, University of Leeds Doctoral College and the Institute of Technology and Arthroplasty.

One of Dr Oladokun's main achievement to date is his work demonstrating the extent of material transformation possible in commonly used orthopaedic metallic alloys when subjected to fretting tribocorrosion conditions. He is a consistent voice for tribology in the orthopaedic community, and also a Young Member Representative for Tribology in the IMechE.

Dr Oladokun stands on the shoulders of great professional mentors in the field of tribology some of whom are: Dr Mike Bryant, Prof. Anne Neville OBE and Catherine Hardaker. He is unable to soar as high without the support of his loving wife and family and the spiritual support system that has kept him grounded to date.
