Professor Anne Neville, Director of the Institute of Functional Surfaces, has been awarded the Tribology Silver Medal 2019.

Professor Neville was educated University of Glasgow where she was awarded a BEng degree in 1992 followed by PhD in Mechanical Engineering in 1995 for her work on the experimental ;study of corrosion and tribocorrosion processes on high alloy stainless steels and Ni-alloys. In the same year she was appointed to a lectureship at Heriot-Watt University and started to build;a research team—initially working largely on the synergy between erosion and corrosion. Her group grew rapidly to more than twenty researchers and the range of their experimental investigations expanded: in 1999 she was promoted to Reader and then Professor in 2002.

Neville and several of her co-workers moved to the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Leeds University in 2003 to further strengthen the Department’s Tribology group. As well as continuing to work on the influence of corrosion in tribological mechanisms, particularly on prosthetic implants, Professor Neville has supervised work on such diverse topics as the boundary lubrication of diamond-like carbon coatings, slurry erosion, the abrasive effects of diesel soot and the adverse effects of friction in surgical tools.

She is now Director of the Institute of Functional Surfaces which comprises more than seventy researchers. The Institute has a funding portfolio that spans many agencies and industrial sectors including medical, oil and gas and automotive and has extensive experimental and computing facilities in the areas of tribology, surface engineering and erosion-corrosion. Every two years the University hosts the Leeds-Lyon Symposium on Tribology that, over a period of several decades, has become established as one of the principal meetings of tribologists from Europe, the U.S. and the Far East.

Professor Neville was an EPSRC Advanced Fellow from 1999 to 2004 and has been awarded a number of prestigious prizes for her work including a Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award in 2011, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers Donald Julius Groen Prize in 2012 and the 2014 STLE Wilbert Shultz Prize. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and of ;the Royal Academy of Engineering. In 2017 she was awarded an OBE for services to engineering and elected a Fellow of the Royal Society.
