4 The Team: Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains

Formula Student Team

With Formula Student in full swing, we caught up with some of the engineers at Mercedes AMG HPP to get the inside scoop on career opportunities.

Tell us a bit more about Mercedes AMG HPP for those who don’t know

We’ve got an exceptional tradition in motor racing and have been the dominant team in Formula 1 for a number of years. At HPP (High Performance Powertrains) we’re responsible for the design and manufacture of Mercedes-Benz Formula 1 racing engines and hybrid power systems for the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS team. We’re also proud suppliers to Sahara Force India and Williams Martini Racing.

HPP create the entire Formula 1 Power Unit, from concept all the way through to racing, and also undertake advanced, high technology projects to transfer F1 technologies into mainstream automotive and high performance road cars. You may have recently heard about our newest venture in this field, Project One, where we’re putting an F1 engine into a roadworthy car – the first of its kind, and a phenomenal engineering challenge.

What new activities are you excited to share in 2018 onward?

Probably the most exciting new development for 2018 and beyond is Mercedes entering the Mercedes EQ Formula E Team in the 2019/20 ABB FIA Formula E Championship season. When we announced our entry, Toto Wolff said “Formula E is a unique series with some very specific challenges for its teams. We know the level of competition is extremely high and we will approach the challenge with energy and humility.”

With technology that is as innovative as it is complex, Formula E is a new racing world, which is why newcomers have so much to learn and so many challenges to master. The Mercedes EQ Formula E Team will be able to draw on the combined experience and technical know-how of our motorsport family and successful motor racing pedigree.

The heart of the new car will be developed at HPP; our Brixworth technology hub is the Daimler Group’s global centre of excellence for high-performance hybrid technology. It is this experience in developing the F1 hybrid power unit that will form the cornerstone of the Formula E technical project.

Thank you for your continued support of the Formula Student competition as a partner in 2018. Why is it so important to get involved in Formula Student?

Formula Student is our biggest student recruitment event of the year; we love being a part of an event that celebrates so many bright and passionate engineers. Our favourite part of the event is hearing the broad range of experiences that the visitors and participants have, and obviously sharing our mutual passion for racing. It’s also a fantastic opportunity for us to find the best engineering talent, and to let people see under the hood (!) of HPP.

What can team members and spectators expect at Mercedes AMG HPP’s stand?

This year we will have Lewis’ championship winning F1 car and 1.6L V6 Power Unit from the 2017 season. Throughout the weekend we will have some of our current students alongside members of our recruitment team at our Marquee, eagerly waiting to answer any questions about what it is like to work with world champions.
