Please briefly explain your role, involvement and experience with regards to pressure systems in a nuclear/new build context

Simon Emeny (SE): I have been the Competent Person technical authority for the UK Sizewell B PSSR competent person since year 2000. Since 2010 I have been Project Director for the ITPIA body at Hinkley Point C and since 2022 at Sizewell C. I have other involvement in my career such as Hanbit 1 – 6 in Korea and Barakah 1 in UAE.

What is the top challenge facing your industry at present?

SE: Finance. Whether it is raising the capital to run a new build project or ensuring sufficient funds to progress a project after FID.

How would you say your industry has evolved over the past two years?

SE: Nuclear New Build inspection has recognised the benefits of remote inspection techniques, initially introduced as part of the COVID-19 pandemic. That said, the need to continue more traditional hands on techniques is also recognised, particularly where CFSI issues are an issue.

What developments are going on in your industry that may have an impact on the development of future pressure systems?

SE: CFSI is a large issue as are investor confidence and knowledge capture and transfer.

Why is it important for engineers and industry to come together at this event and share best practice?

SE: We learn something everyday, if we remain curious, which is what most engineers do. This event gives the opportunity for participants to gain both an insight and the latest detail of the nuclear pressure equipment industry in particular.

The Pressure System in Nuclear New Build seminar will take place on 21 March 2023.

With nuclear power plant now considered a key element of the UK's energy mix to meet Net Zero requirements, their associated pressure systems will also be under greater duress.

Join this seminar to hear technical insights and lessons learned from operators, suppliers and regulators that will enable engineers to realise improved pressure system reliability, performance, inspections and much more.
