Institution News Team

Yusuf identifies some of the innovations for greater safety and reliability for the operation of cranes and lifting equipment.

Yusuf will be presenting at the IMechE's Crane Safety event in October, for the full agenda and to book your place please visit the event website.

Please could you briefly explain your role, involvement, and experience with regards to the Lifting and Crane industry and this event?

Yusuf Warsama (YW): I started my career in the industry as a Graduate Engineer for Mammoet, working on everything from day-to-day crane operations to major infrastructure projects. I now work for Mammoet as a Technical Sales Manager. My role in the lifting and crane industry involves supporting clients in finding the safest and most optimal solutions to overcome any challenges they might face.

What, in your experience, has been the biggest roadblock for the industry over the past 2-3 years?

YW: The lifting and crane industry is no different from any other and faces its own roadblocks and challenges. One such challenge, which is literally a roadblock and quite unique to the industry, is the increasing complexity of getting cranes to and from sites in recent years. Another challenge, which is not unique to the industry, is the recruitment and retention of engineers.

What key topics are you excited to discuss at this year's conference?

YW: I am excited to discuss the innovations Mammoet is developing and using to support our customers.

What would you say are the areas of innovation across the UK lifting and crane industry?

YW: There are several areas:

  • Development of new software to support lift planning (3D software)
  • The use of 3D scanning becoming more common in lift planning
  • Using AI
  • Development of larger capacity cranes

Who else are you most interested in hearing from on the programme?

YW: I am really looking forward to "Using AI to Plan for Lifting Operations" and finding out from other delegates how they are applying AI in their workplaces.

Why is it important for engineers to join this conference?

YW: I think it is important not just for engineers but for anyone involved in the industry to come and join, from planners and safety personnel to crane drivers. Apart from the networking, I have also found the event thought-provoking and have always taken away something valuable, most importantly, learning something new!

This year's Crane Safety technical event will return to One Birdcage Walk on 15 October 2024

Now in its eighth iteration, the event addresses the key challenges of safety, risk and compliance to inform and support all those involved in lifting projects.

Join to meet and hear from Health & Safety Executive, Liftra, Align JV, Metswift, Mamoet, Sir Robert McAlpine, Terex Cranes, and more; for the full agenda and to book your place please visit the event website.

Plus: access all the presentations at the co-located Sustainable and Decarbonised Construction event, taking place at the same time. Bring your colleagues and maximise the learning and networking at our technical events.
