Hydrogen-powered offroad vehicles, a lithium processing plant and ‘revolutionary’ new battery systems are amongst 20 electric vehicle (EV) technology projects receiving £89m of government and industry funding.

The successful schemes, selected from across four competitions, were announced by the government today (9 October). Funding will be awarded through the Advanced Propulsion Centre, with the aim of building an ‘end-to-end supply chain for zero emission vehicles’ in the UK. £45.2m of the investment is from the government, with a further £42.7m from the automotive industry.

The funding package includes four collaborative R&D projects, five ‘scale-up’ projects, and seven feasibility studies to prepare projects to develop large-scale manufacturing facilities in the UK.

Winners of the latest collaborative R&D competition funding include Aston Martin, which is accelerating the development of a luxury EV platform, and Perkins, which aims to develop a hydrogen-hybrid integrated power system for offroad vehicles.

The four R&D projects are estimated to create or safeguard more than 4,700 jobs and save nearly 65m tonnes of carbon dioxide from being emitted over the next decade.

Other schemes to receive money include Green Lithium, which plans to build a lithium scale-up plant in Teesside, and Ilika Technologies, which is working to accelerate the scale-up of Ilika’s solid state battery technology.

Feasibility studies include Cornish Lithium, which is establishing a lithium processing plant in the UK to produce anode material for EV batteries, and Aberdeen Minerals, for the study of innovative mineral processing routes.
