When you think of Direct Line Group you would be forgiven for not thinking it is a traditional employer of engineers. Find out more about career opportunities post-FS with the insurer.

There are actually a lot of places where the engineering mindset and knowledge is immensely useful in Direct Line Group. Hopefully we can open your eyes to some of the opportunities available for engineering graduates in insurance.

As a general insurer, it is our duty to understand the motor market as best we can so that we can provide insurance to the many different vehicles in the UK. Naturally we need to be able to understand what is currently on the road but we also need to think about what may go on the road in future. That’s where people like you come in; engineers at Direct Line Group look at the landscape of the car market in the UK and also around the world and analyse trends and technologies ahead of time so that we can better understand how to insure these vehicles and keep people on the road safe as well as how cars are repaired post-accident today and in future.

At Direct Line Group in particular, we also own our body shops and therefore are very invested in the repairability and sustainability of vehicles on the road today. This side of the business, called DLG Auto Services, is rapidly expanding and needs engineering talent to help it achieve its goals better.

A key part of ensuring these vehicles remain safe on the roads involves being able to apply your engineering skills to the insurance process. Ultimately this can help us make better decisions on how insurance works, today and in the future. This could involve anything from helping our pricing and underwriting teams understand new technologies, improving a customer’s journey through various processes you help develop all the way through to making sure a car is safely repaired to its pre-accident condition.

An engineer in DLG Auto Services needs to be able to apply engineering thinking to how to safely repair cars accounting for ever changing technology. This first and foremost includes understanding how best to return a car to its pre-accident state, whilst accounting for all the new additions on vehicles currently. Other parts of the job could include things like looking into greener and more environmentally friendly repair processes, all the way through to working with industry bodies to challenge vehicle manufacturers on the repairability of their vehicles and the design choices made.

Every bit of the lifecycle of a vehicle is looked at very closely and you could have a hand in shaping this journey for everyone on the road in the UK. Your input could help write the standard for road vehicles of the future.

The automotive engineering process does not stop with vehicles rolling off the end of a production line, and insurance is a large part of the lifetime of a vehicle on the road. As an engineer at Direct Line Group, you’ll have the opportunity to shape the journey for drivers, whether that’s making cars safer for on the road, simplifying the repair process or challenging key engineering decisions with an eye on the bigger picture.

The culture at Direct Line Group really is something else. We embrace our individuality – you’ll see it in the way that we think and work, it’s all about ensuring you can enjoy making a contribution, have some fun and be yourself in every aspect. We encourage each other to be the best we can be: no opinion goes unheard, no achievement goes unrecognised, and no idea goes unknown! Our colleagues come from a range of backgrounds which means we benefit from alternative viewpoints, perspectives and ideas. We celebrate and encourage this individuality, and believe it makes us strong and supportive as a team.
