Wexas Travel, the Institution’s travel partner, invites you to an evening with Sir Ranulph Fiennes Bt OBE as he talks about expeditions past and present.

Described as ‘the world’s greatest living explorer’, Wexas' Honorary President, Sir Ranulph, has undertaken great quests throughout his extraordinary life. He will discuss these at an exclusive event at the Institution’s headquarters, One Birdcage Walk, on 17 November.

His most recent endeavour, at the age of 72, is the Global Reach Challenge to raise money for Marie Curie, the charity that provides care and support for those living with terminal illness and their families. On completion, he will become the first person to have crossed both polar ice caps and to have climbed the highest mountain on each continent.

Sir Ranulph says: “Climbing five mountains in a short space of time is going to be a definite challenge, especially climbing Denali in Alaska which only had an 18% success rate during this year’s season. But if it raises money for Marie Curie then I would really like to have a go.”

His adventures and international expeditions – including conquering summits, inhospitable terrain and multiple marathons – have demanded incredible physical and mental endurance.

In addition, the challenges he has led have often required expert engineering support. During the first ever trans-Antarctic winter expedition attempt, known as The Coldest Journey, two highly modified Finning Caterpillar D6Ns provided essential survival resources. The vehicles were fundamental to all aspects of the expedition, from transportation to digging, and were fitted with specially designed ‘crevasse arms’ – among a huge number of intricate adaptations – to deal with the harsh environment and -90C temperatures.

The polar expedition was supported by the Institution. The traverse was aborted in 2013 due to perilous conditions, but the ice team collected vital science data and contributed to educational outreach and international science projects and raised money for the charity Seeing is Believing.

Wexas Travel is the travel partner of the Institution, providing tailor-made holidays and luxury trips, with first-hand expert knowledge of a wealth of worldwide destinations. As a member of the Institution, you are entitled to free membership of Wexas Travel.

The evening’s events will commence with drinks and canapes, followed by the presentation by Sir Ranulph. There will also be an opportunity to talk to Wexas Travel specialists.
