Institution news
At a certificate presentation ceremony held at the university, Immediate Past-President of the Institution Professor Richard Folkson met Dr Habtom Mebrahtu PhD CEng MIET FHEA, Deputy Head of the Department of Engineering and the Built Environment. Dr Mebrahtu was delighted to receive notification of the accreditation, having applied to the Institution’s Academic Standards Committee.
During their visit, Professor Folkson and Lara Mallett, the Institution's Business Development Manager for the East Midlands and Eastern Region, met mechanical engineering students as well as university representatives. Lara gave a presentation to first-years, providing them with information about the Institution and the ways in which membership can benefit their studies and support their career development in engineering.
Richard talked about his life as an engineer. There was time to engage informally with students, who had many questions for Lara and for Richard, about careers in engineering, professional development, grants and membership of the Institution. The students were eager to get Richard’s perspective on the profession, and further insights into his own career path and choices.
Dr Mebrahtu said: "Accreditation of these programmes by the Institution confirms the academic standard at ARU. It enables our students to work and plan their career development with confidence that they are on the path to professional registration as Incorporated or Chartered Engineers.
“The support from the Institution, through Lara, has been excellent. We are grateful to Richard for the time he took to answer questions, advise students and interact with them: they appreciated his time immensely. This visit was instrumental in inspiring our first-year mechanical engineering cohort to register as Student Affiliate Members of the Institution.”
Richard said: "I was absolutely delighted to see the progress being made at Anglia Ruskin University to strengthen and grow its engineering courses. Accreditation by the Institution is a really important step in confirming the high standard being delivered on the courses and I look forward to seeing additional positive growth of engineering activities in the future."

Institution accreditation means that the ARU’s BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering is recognised as meeting the academic requirement for Incorporated Engineer registration up to and including the intakes of 2013 through to 2019.
The MSc in Mechanical Engineering meets the Further Learning component of the academic requirement for Chartered Engineer registration up to and including the intakes of 2014 through to 2019.
The details of accreditation of these programmes have been recorded on the Engineering Council’s database. View further information relating to academic requirements and further learning for professional registration with the Institution.
Students completing an Institution accredited degree are deemed to have met part or all of the academic requirements for registration as a Chartered or Incorporated Engineer and are in a strong position to move on to achieve professional engineering status after a period of initial professional development in industry.
