Annual General Meeting 2018, IMechE Pakistan Group

The meeting was held on 13 May, 2018 in the Pearl Continental, Karachi. IMechE members and volunteers from both the North and South regions attended along with some renowned engineers from the Pakistan industry.

The event started with a presentation from the Immediate Past Chair of IMechE Pakistan, Dr. Mohammed Uneeb. He spoke about the importance of industry-academia linkage and the events like national Design Challenge and the workshop on reverse engineering being arranged at GIKI Topi, Pakistan. He also suggested arranging workshops and seminars for students, young engineers and members from the industry, with trainers and mentors coming from the IMechE UK. This was then followed by a small briefing from Mr. Hassan Ghayasuddin Ansari, the former Honorary Secretary, on the benefits of IMechE membership, the current strength, the strategic objectives of IMechE and the events held by IMechE every year.

On behalf of the Young Members Representative, Mr Gohar I Shoukat, Dr. Bilal, from the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC), presented the Young Members Panel report and encouraged the representatives of the industry to work with academia in order to improve the face of engineering in Pakistan. He mentioned a few projects done by students for industries on a platform provided by IMechE Pakistan

Mr. Shamsuddin Shaikh, Chief Executive Officer Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC), and Mr. Naseem A Khan, Senior Executive Director at Osmani & Company (Pvt.) Ltd., talked respectively about a coal power plant being constructed in Thar, under SECMC, and the power needs of Pakistan that it can fulfil, and the importance of the wind power sector, its future, particularly in Pakistan.

As an Independent Election Supervisor, Mr. Sarfaraz Ahmed, the Pakistan Chair of the Institution of Civil Engineers (UK’s ICE Pakistan Chapter), announced the results of elections for the IMechE Pakistan Group’s Executive Committee.

Dr. Muhammad Tufail the Chair Elect and Dr M Uneeb, then handed out awards to a few guests from the industry for their services. concluding with a few words about the future of IMechE and engineering in Pakistan. The platform was then opened for networking which was followed by lunch.

The 14^th Executive Committee Meeting was held after lunch. Dr. Tufail, Dr. Uneeb, Mr. Hassan Ghayasudin, Mr. Arslan Allahyar, and Mr. Mobeen, webmaster IMechE Pakistan, attended the meeting.
