BAE Systems Submarines in Barrow has hosted its third annual celebration for new Institution members and Fellows.

The hosts welcomed representatives from the Institution and IET jointly to present certificates to engineers achieving professional registration or Fellowship status with both institutions.

In attendance from BAE Systems Submarines were Russell Watson CEng FIMarEST, Engineering Director, and Graeme Corkill CEng FIMechE, Deputy Chief Engineer, who gave the Senior Management Support Presentation.

Martin Pulford, Engineering Capability Manager, plays a key role in Company Based Registration (CBR) at Barrow. He welcomed the group and congratulated the new members and Fellows on their achievement, recognising their hard work and commitment.

Head of Business Development, Nicole Rinaldi, attended on behalf of the Institution. Nicole said: "Company Based Registration is a straightforward way for an organisation to facilitate professional registration of its engineers. The Institution provided dedicated support throughout the application process, including workshops, one-to-one guidance and application reviews – leading to interviews at the Barrow site.”

Martin and the teams at BAE Systems Submarines have worked closely with the Institution for several years. The CBR programme at Barrow was reinvigorated in 2012 and has enabled the professional registration of successful new members as a result. Martin said: "We realised that there were many engineers who had been with us a number of years, and new joiners whose experience meant they were ready to become Chartered Engineers. We also felt those very experienced engineers could be ready to be elected Fellows, hence the relaunch.”

The CBR process at BAE Systems Submarines was initiated by presentations by the Institution's Business Development Managers (BDMs). Subsequently, cohorts of engineers worked on their content for professional registration application or election to Fellow. Martin set deadlines, managing the submission of draft applications which were reviewed by Institution representatives. After final applications were submitted, BDMs ran workshops, followed by authentic interviews, held on site at Barrow and results were delivered to the individuals.

Speaking at the event, Graeme Corkill outlined some of the reasons why professional registration is so important to BAE Systems, which has in the region of 1,400 engineers and designers.

He said: “It is great to see so many engineers here today that have taken the time and effort to gain the professional registration that they clearly deserve.  The award of CEng or IEng and Fellowship provides them with the professional registration that recognises their abilities and expertise in either mechanical or electrical engineering.”

Graeme feels professional registration brings many benefits to the individual and to the business organisation. Engineers receive international recognition of their qualifications; improved career prospects; and become part of an internationally recognised institution, which brings many learning and development opportunities.

Businesses gain increased technical and managerial credibility with customers; their company’s reputation is enhanced through ethical behaviour and rigorous assessment of their engineers’ competence; and there is a positive impact on recruitment and retention.

Since starting the CBRs in 2012, and if the 2015-16 cohorts are successful, BAE Systems Submarines would have achieved an outstanding 37 new Fellows and 145 CEng and IEng members across the Engineering Council register.

Graeme concluded: "The business remains committed to supporting our engineers through professional registration for all institutions, and is keen on developing the relationship with the IET and IMechE further to ensure more of our engineers seek professional registration.”
