Boeing’s has opened its first European factory near Sheffield, creating more than 50 jobs and apprenticeships.
The facility, which stands alongside the University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC), will build more than 100 different advanced components for Boeing 737 and 767 planes.
The opening is a rare sign of confidence from the international aerospace sector in the UK’s post-Brexit business landscape. European giant Airbus warned it could leave the UK in the event of a ‘no-deal’ Brexit, while engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce has repeatedly voiced concern and claimed it could be forced into stockpiling parts
Covering more than 6,000m2, the factory will house 52 employees including 25 apprentices, with that number set to rise. The American multinational already employs more than 2,200 people in the UK and spends about £2bn per year in the supply chain.
“Boeing’s choice of location is a strong sign of confidence in our advanced engineering excellence, confidence in our workforce and strong manufacturing heritage, and confidence in the cutting-edge collaborations between university and business that enable us to lead the world,” said Sheffield mayor Dan Jarvis.
The factory’s location next to the AMRC is reportedly key to a “major” new R&D programme.
The government supported the new facility with a £2.7m grant through the Industrial Strategy. Business secretary Greg Clark said Boeing’s choice of location “is testament to the reputation of Sheffield as a centre of innovation, advanced manufacturing and the UK’s status as a world-leader in aviation. This new facility will export components around the world, boosting the UK supply chain and creating high quality jobs.”
