Bombardier to cut almost 400 jobs in Belfast

PE

Cuts will affect permanent staff and temporary workers in all areas of the company

Bombardier has announced it is to cut up to 390 jobs at its Belfast-based business as a result of a company restructuring.

The Canadian headquartered firm will be ending 300 temporary and contract jobs and is seeking 90 redundancies from its permanent workforce. Half of the 300 temporary employees who are affected work on the shop floor making the products.

A Bombardier spokeswoman said: "It is right across the company, all areas of the company will be affected."

In Belfast, Bombardier currently has about 5,000 permanent employees, and around 1,300 contractors and Complementary Labour Force workers.

Bombardier said that following the restructuring, the Belfast site will now form part of the new Aerostructures and Engineering Services business segment.

It will specialise in the design and development of complex composite and metallic structures, including wings, fuselages and engine nacelles.

"That will allow us to be more flexible in terms of responding to customer needs," the spokeswoman added.

Bombardier is cutting about 1,800 jobs across its global operations.
