Less than two weeks remain for engineering students to enter a BP-organised competition that offers a two week trip to Trinidad and Tobago as its top prize.
The oil and gas firm’s “Ultimate Field Trip”, which has run annually since 2010, asks teams of three students to develop a solution to a real world energy challenge.
This year’s challenge is to develop a novel technical solution that reduces and / or reuses the water used in oil and gas production and processing.
During the two week trip to Trinidad and Tobago, the winning team from the UK will join teams from three other countries and visit a BP offshore platform and onshore processing facility. The winners will also have leisure time to visit Tobago and the Pigeon Point Heritage Park. In addition, each winning team member will receive £500 worth of Amazon vouchers.
Students from UK universities can register a team of three to take part at www.bp.com/UFT/UK and are required to complete a short technical quiz by the 21st November 2014. A shortlist of teams will be selected by 24 November and asked to send in their solution to this year’s challenge. The successful teams will progress to a semi-final in February 2015. A UK national final will then take place on the 10 March 2015 at the British Museum, London.
Christopher Clay, from the “I challenge you to a Joule” team from Oxford University, which won the competition last year, said: “We would absolutely encourage anyone thinking of entering the competition, to do so. We like a challenge and the competition provided us with the opportunity to test ourselves beyond the scope of our engineering degrees. Personally, learning more about the energy industry has made me even more passionate about working in it.”
Julia Harvie-Liddel, group head of resourcing at BP, said: “Water, the topic of this year’s challenge, is especially pertinent given the potential ramifications of a global water shortage. We hope that this will give students a real insight into our industry and show them that a career in oil and gas is a platform from which they can make a real difference.”
