Celebrating excellence at The Manufacturer MX Awards and Digital Manufacturing Week 2022

Institution News Team

Every year, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers partner up with The Manufacturer to host The Manufacturer MX Awards (TMMX) in Liverpool.

The TMMX Awards have a combined heritage of over 50 years and is widely regarded as the gold standard in industry awards, therefore being able to attend the event is a fantastic opportunity to network, celebrate manufacturing excellence, and potentially win an award.

The award categories range from recognition in innovation and sustainability, through to apprenticeships, leadership, and staff engagement, so there are plenty of opportunities for UK businesses of all sizes and sectors to be recognised.

IMechE President, Phil Peel attended TMMX Awards this year to represent the Institution and to meet the extraordinary people in the manufacturing industry. Phil, who is the Institution’s first non-UK resident President, says:

I am honoured to be in a room full of brilliant, inspiring manufacturing engineers and to celebrate their achievements. It’s wonderful to see so many, including some IMechE members, being recognised today.

Events such as this provide a wide range of opportunities to mingle and network with people you may never have had the chance to meet before. Especially for the winners of IMechE’s Apprentice Automation Challenge, it’s a great occasion to acknowledge their success and for them to make new connections and possibly take that next step in their careers."

This year, IMechE are delighted to be joined by the winners of the Apprentice Automation Challenge 2022. Team Leonardo SAL secured the company’s third win in a row on 2 September, as well as winning the peer review award. The team of five apprentices designed and built a product that reduces plastic waste, with considerations for older customers, and simplifying an existing process that would have real-world benefits.

The Apprentice Automation Challenge aims to develop the next generation of apprentice engineering talent with a real-world project for apprentices to further their engineering knowledge, business acumen and practical skills to become well-rounded engineers post apprenticeship.

TMMX Awards takes place just before The Digital Manufacturing Week, which is celebrated between 14-18 November, and is produced by The Manufacturer.

The Week brings the manufacturing sector together to help businesses at all stages of their digital transformation, arming them with real insights from the industry. There are several events taking place across the week from TMMX Awards to The Smart Factory Expo, the industry’s biggest digital manufacturing show.

Past President, Peter Flinn attended the Smart Factory Expo to present his Net Zero lecture during the Leadership & Strategy talk on day two. His lecture covered how the UK, in particular, can achieve net zero from an engineering perspective. Focusing on low-carbon sources, Peter identified the issues that are critical to the success of the ‘net zero’ sustainability enterprise.

The Institution would like to say a huge thank you to The Manufacturer, and all those involved in running the TMMX Awards and Digital Manufacturing Week. We’re proud to be a sponsor of the event and look forward to doing it all again next year!
