Raphael Amajuoyi of Hurley Palmer Flatt was named as the CIBSE ASHRAE Graduate of the Year for 2017 at the recent CBSD co-sponsored event held at IMechE HQ.

This award, supported by IMechE's Construction and Building Services Division has been celebrating the industry’s best examples of young engineering talent for 22 years.

Raphael was selected from a shortlist of eight finalists for the awards sponsored by Andrews Water Heaters, Kingspan Industrial Insulation, Swegon Air Management and the CIBSE Patrons.

Raphael, who wins a VIP trip to the ASHRAE Winter Conference in Chicago next January, is a graduate consultant in the energy and sustainability development team at Hurley Palmer Flatt. He gained a BSc in architectural engineering and design management and an MSc in low carbon building design and modelling from Loughborough University.

Bursary
First runner up, Ana Recio, works for Arup and graduated from the University of the West of England. She wins a £600 bursary from the Rumford Club. The second runner up,  Kiyomi Honjigawa of Buro Happold Engineering and Heriot-Watt University, wins £300. The other five finalists all received £100 from the Manly Trust.

The Graduate Award finalists each had five minutes to address the topic: ‘Is engineering an art and should building services professionals be more creative in the way they approach projects?’ The topic was designed to reflect the presidential theme of CIBSE President Peter Wong, one of the judges for this year's award..

“We had a record number of entries this year from all over the world,” said chair of judges Tim Dwyer CEng FIMechE. “The quality of presentations was higher than ever; it was a fantastic experience for the eight young finalists to present to a packed lecture theatre and to the CIBSE president, ASHRAE president Bjarne Olesen, IMechE President Carolyn Griffiths and the  IMechE Chief Executive, Stephen Tetlow.”

Stephen commented "All the entrants deserve congratulations.  The professionalism, innovation and imagination in their entries were staggering.  It was an uplifting privilege to be a judge of these brilliant entries.  Engineering has a bright future with new minds like these in our profession.”
