Congratulations to Benjamin Ong Kuan Liang for winning IMechE’s Speak Out for Engineering Global Competition 2022!

Institution News Team

Representing the South East Asia Region, Benjamin is a Mechanical Engineering student from University of Malaya.

On Friday 16 September 2022, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers hosted the 57th Speak Out for Engineering Global Final. We saw seven participants, from all over the Globe, showcase their presentations both on the stage at One Birdcage Walk and virtually.

The competition is organised and run annually by the Young Members of the Institution. It continues to challenge young engineers to prove that they can communicate effectively. It is specifically concerned with verbal and visual communication in describing and explaining technical subjects.

This year, the prize was awarded to Benjamin Ong Kuan Liang for his fun and engaging presentation on travelling to Mars. Benjamin had the audience in the palm of his hand as he took a charismatic, humorous approach to presenting whilst also applying his engineering knowledge.

Project M.A.R.S. (Mars as Relocation Sanctuary, which is fictional), aims to have Mars as a safe haven outside of Earth for the survival of human beings in case Earth becomes inhabitable. Benjamin Ong presented the basic mechanism for us to reach Mars using orbital mechanics.

The presentation is delivered in an interactive way where the audience pretends that they are in this mission as a crew member, the presenter, Benjamin is the captain explaining the basics of the mission.

The runner up this year was Subbiksha Sugumar, representing the Middle East and Africa Region. Subbiksha’s presentation was inspired by her grandmother after she was diagnosed with diabetes. She explained her plan of creating a prosthetic wrist and finger mechanism to ease everyday life for those who need it.

IMechE’s President, Phil Peel, was one of the Head Judges for the competition and says:

“I was honoured to be one of the judges at the Speak Out for Engineering Global Final this year. We saw seven inspiring finalists, five in person and two virtually, showcase their presentations and I was delighted to announce Benjamin Ong Kuan Liang as the overall winner.

One of my priorities for the year is to extend IMechE’s Global reach so it was encouraging seeing these young engineers from across the Globe compete in this year’s final.”

The Institution would like to extend a huge congratulations and thank you to everyone who participated in the Speak Out for Engineering competition. Find out more here.
