Institution news
As oil and gas projects become ever deeper, with associated challenges, there is a fast-growing need to implement effective asset integrity and management solutions in the subsea sector. Whether it is through Remote Operated Vehicles (ROVs), remote tooling or subsea tieback – the creation of a connection between new and existing production facilities – now is the time to learn how subsea equipment can be installed and maintained to ensure successful and sufficient life extension of deep water oil and gas fields.
The Subsea Engineering 2014 conference will highlight key international projects and their implications; the economics of subsea tieback; health and safety and regulatory directives; improving flow assurance through simulation technology and multi-scale approaches; and the challenges in design, integrity, maintenance and operations.
The Institution of Mechanical Engineers has assembled a number of experts from industry and academia, under the guidance of the conference’s first Special Advisory Board, who will give presentations and take part in panel debates and round table discussions.
Subsea Engineering 2014 is chaired by Robert Swindell, Dynamics Manager, Xodus Group Europe, of the Offshore Engineering and Upstream Committee at the Institution, who has 24 years’ industry experience.
The Institution is delighted to announce that Fergus Ewing, MSP for Inverness and Nairn, Scottish Minister for Energy, Enterprise and Tourism, will present a keynote address to open the conference.
Speakers include:
- Marianne Wheeler CEng, an expert in Andrew Area Development (AAD) and Subsea Construction Manager for BP, has 16 years’ experience in pipeline and subsea system design and in project and construction management. She will deliver a Special Address on AAD
- Graham Matthews, Subsea and Pipelines Manager, Taqa. With 25 years’ experience in oil and gas, Graham’s current remit includes responsibility for the safe operation of Taqa’s North Sea subsea assets
- Neil Gordon, CEO Subsea UK. Having worked as a commercial diver in UK and Norwegian waters on many offshore projects, Neil has now gained considerable management experience in the subsea industry
- Doug Scott, ROV and ROT Engineer, BP UK has worked on the design of deep water site technology, for example, operating at up to 2500 metres in four linked sites offshore Angola. He will illustrate the benefits of remote tooling to support maintenance tasks
- Nigel Dyer, GPO Global Concepts Development, Subsea Discipline Engineer, BP UK will present the functions and aids to productivity through subsea tieback and discuss its viability for deeper subsea developments
- Paul Dymond MBE, Senior Consultant, Oil and Gas UK has more than 35 years experience in varied roles in petroleum engineering, including exploration and decommissioning. His presentation will discuss spill prevention and mitigation post Macondo (aka Deepwater Horizon, the catastrophic oil explosion and spill in the Gulf of Mexico, 2010)
Delegates will:
- Gain an understanding of how to improve the design of subsea technology prior to installation
- Hear how engineers are implementing effective response methods to system and component failures
- Discuss the latest subsea technology to identify and repair leaks, valves and pipe blockages
- Analyse the benefits of introducing ‘subsea tieback’ as a cost effective solution for commercial companies
- Learn how to manage the threat of subsea pipe-work fatigue failure
- Consider the possibilities of effective autonomous control systems in subsea engineering
The Institution would like to thank members of the Subsea Engineering 2014 Advisory Board for their expertise and input with the programme:
- Jim Bridge, Chairman Offshore Engineering and Upstream Committee
- Lee Billingham CEng FIMechE, GPO Global Concepts Development, BP UK
- Rob Swindell, Member Offshore Engineering and Upstream Committee
- Professor John Strutt, Technical Director, Astrimar
