The carrier variant of the Joint Strike Fighter was described as more capable than the short take-off and vertical landing variant

Reading the December 2011 issue of PE I noted that the carrier variant of the Joint Strike Fighter was described as more capable than the short take-off and vertical landing variant (View from Westminster) and I have read the variants described this way in other places as well.

The Oxford Dictionary of English defines capable as "having the ability, fitness, or quality necessary to do or achieve a specified thing". While the carrier variant has a greater range, among other advantages, the short take-off and vertical landing variant can take-off over shorter distances and land vertically! One is not more capable than the other, they have different capabilities, as the government is now finding out the hard way.
