Visiting the Avedøre power plant

On Friday, 29 September 2017, the Institution organised its first official Danish event since 2003 - a visit to the 570MW Avedøre power plant.

The plant was originally built in 1990 as a coal-fired plant. It now consists of two main units, both of which can additionally burn wood pellets, straw and natural gas.

The tour started with a presentation about DONG Energy to explain how this plant fits into their portfolio and how they regulate the power and district heat outputs to meet market demands.

Avedøre control room

In the control room, the operator told us a lot of details about maintenance procedures and how to quickly and effectively respond to alarms. The tour also included a visit to block two to see the entire turbine system and cooler. The sheer scale was impressive.

Six members visited the plant

Six IMechE members took part in the visit - four from the Denmark group, one from the Germany group and one from the Norway group. After the event it was onward to central Copenhagen for good food and beer.
