Danish company DONG Energy is building the world’s largest offshore windfarm, slated for completion by 2020.
The Hornsea Project One windfarm is being built 120km off the Yorkshire coast and will span an area of 407km2 – that’s more than five times the size of Hull.
It will feature 174 7MW turbines, each 190m tall – 10m higher than the Gherkin building in London – and similar to the 35 6MW turbines used at the company’s Westermost Rough windfarm (pictured) off the Holderness coast.
Hornsea Project One’s total output will be 1.2GW, compared to 630MW at the largest existing offshore windfarm, the London Array, off the Kent coast.
The project is expected to create 2,300 jobs and to power more than one million UK homes.
