Formula Student knowledge sharing event organised by the Sri Lanka’s only FS team - TeamSHARK of University of Moratuwa Chapter

TeamSHARK Racing, a group of undergraduate students from Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Moratuwa participated for the recently concluded IMechE Formula Student 2018 competition.

A group of 19 students led by Mr. Lakshitha de Silva under the guidance of Dr. J. R. Gamage (Formula Student Project Coordinator) and Mr. Sasiranga De Silva (Formula Student Advisor) designed, built and raced their own formula-style race car at the famous Silverstone Circuit, UK from 11th to 15th of July 2018. The team became overall 33rd in the competition while becoming the 2ndin Asia. Their hard work, commitment and dedication throughout a year made the Formula Student dream possible for the University of Moratuwa.

Competition rankings:

  • Design - 20th
  • Skid pad – 11th
  • Acceleration - 26th
  • Endurance – 22nd

The main highlights of the 2018 car named “Fire Demon” were:

  • reduced weight up to 209kg
  • custom fabricated carbon fibre body
  • aero and other components
  • dry sump system
  • custom fabricated wheel assembly
  • custom fabricated and tuned intake and exhaust system
  • electronic throttle control, data acquisition system
  • custom fabricated multi-functional steering wheel with custom dash display.

The design of the livery was made with the influence of the Sri Lankan traditional Fire Demon mask which was praised at the competition. The sole sponsor of the project is DIMO PLC and the Carbon Fibre partner is SouthernSpars.

The University of Moratuwa student chapter organised a Formula Student knowledge sharing event on 11 September 2018 at the University premises. Over 50 enthusiastic young Members from the University of Ruhuna, Open University, and Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology took part in the event.

IMechE Sri Lanka Group supported and welcomed the initiative and emphasised the importance of young member interactions. This was the first time that four student chapters got together for such an event.
