Formula Student to award F1 in Schools finalists

Formula Student Team

12-15 January 2023: FS joins F1 in Schools for the first time.

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers’ Formula Student competition is delighted to be involved with the 2022 F1 in Schools UK National Finals, which will see dozens of school teams from across the UK compete in this internationally-recognised STEM competition.

Supported by Formula One and spanning age ranges of 9 to 19, F1 in Schools is an international educational programme that raises awareness of STEM and Formula 1 among students and school children around the world.

Powered only by a single 8g compressed air cartridge, cars designed and built by F1 in Schools teams are designed to travel a 20 metre race distance as quickly as possible, whilst withstanding the forces of launch acceleration, track traversing and physical deceleration after crossing the finishing line.

Sharing the objectives of the Formula Student competition and the IMechE, F1 in Schools aims to change the perceptions of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) amongst young people. Participants enjoy a fun and exciting learning environment and are able to develop an informed view about possible future careers involving STEM subjects.

Appropriately for the Institution’s focus on mechanical engineering, Formula Student will be presenting awards for the Best Engineered Car in the Professional Class and Development Class Competitions.

“F1 in schools is a well-established educational motorsport competition for primary and secondary schools to which Formula Student is a natural next step in a student’s progression towards a career in engineering,” said Naomi Rolfe, project manager for the Formula Student competition, “this is why we are excited to support and promote this competition”

The UK National Finals will be fully livestreamed from the venue at the NEC: for full details please visit the F1 in Schools website.
