Organised by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers' Biomedical Engineering Division (BmED), the 2023 Healthcare Technologies Student and Early Career Awards took place on 12 September at One Birdcage Walk, London.

Each year, the competition offers researchers in the early stages of their career an opportunity to showcase their work to business and academic leaders in the wide field of bioengineering. Judges from the BmED board awarded prizes sponsored by industry partners to the best presentations across four categories.

Georgie Bird, BmED and Chair of Healthcare Technologies Student and Early Career Awards, reports on the day’s events as selected researchers came from all over the country to present their work:

The event started with poster presentations. In the mixed undergraduate/MSc category sponsored by NIHR Surgical MedTech Co-Operative, Hoda Gendya, University of Leeds, won the category with her poster entitled 'A Novel Method for the Synthesis and Fabrication of 3D-Printed Chitosan-Based Hydrogels'. The runners-up were Akshat Sharma, University of Cambridge and Luc Dedryver, Imperial College London.

The PhD Poster category was sponsored by the Biomedical Engineering Division, IMechE. Kabelan J Karunaseelan, Imperial College London, won the category with his research entitled Optimal hip capsular release for joint exposure in hip resurfacing via the Direct Anterior Approach. The runners-up were Esfandiar Khaleghi, Kingston University London and Alex Wren, University of Strathclyde.

Vicon sponsored the prize for Best Engineering Undergraduate Project, won by Aylish Moore, Queen Mary University of London. Her presentation focused on the development of pessary devices for female urinary incontinence. The runners-up for this category were Benjamin Lovat, Imperial College London and Semhar Misghin, Queen Mary University of London.

The Inspiration Prize for Best Engineering PhD Project was awarded to Taiyu Zhu, University of Oxford for his work on transforming personalised diabetes care through deep learning. The runner-up for this category was Catherine Hill, University of Hull (sponsored by Smith+Nephew).

The event saw amazing work showcased by all students and was all work was highlighted commented on by all judges and guests.
