Milan public transport company ATM has awarded Hitachi Rail a €368m framework agreement for a fleet of new metro trains.

The investment, part of ATM’s plan for a more sustainable and advanced transport network, will pay for 46 new trains. 21 trains worth €168m will be supplied for the first part of the agreement, destined for line M1. The first trains are due to enter service in spring 2024.

Each train will be 106.5m long, composed of six aluminium carriages with an uninterrupted view from the front to the end of the service. They will have a maximum speed of 90 km/h.

A surveillance system will provide real-time video to the control room to improve onboard security, while external surfaces are designed to be ‘especially resistant’ to vandalism.

The trains will also be equipped with integral air conditioning and have lower noise levels than other services for increased passenger comfort, Hitachi said.

The vehicles will be manufactured in the Italian Hitachi Rail plants in Naples and Reggio Calabria.
