We are saddened to hear the news of HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
Prince Philip first became interested in engineering as a naval cadet, and since that time the Duke of Edinburgh’s links with the profession only went from strength to strength.
He was elected an honorary fellow of the IMechE in 1960, and the following year was invited to give the seventh Graham Clark Lecture, entitled “The Engineer in Commonwealth Development”. In this lecture, he outlined the varied contributions that engineers could make to development around the world in a range of areas, including food and agriculture, energy, industry, transport and education.
The Institution in celebrating his long life and his significant contributions to our profession, sends its most sincere condolences to Her Majesty the Queen and her family at this very sad time.
