The Institution of Mechanical Engineers is proud to announce that Professor Philip Shipway, has been awarded the prestigious Tribology Silver Medal for 2024.
Recognised as a leading figure in the field of tribology, Shipway has made outstanding contributions to understanding wear mechanisms in engineering components, advancing both academic research and industrial practices.
Professor Shipway’s research has been instrumental in exploring erosive and abrasive wear processes in metals and non-metals, as well as enhancing laboratory-based wear-testing techniques.
Notable achievements in his career include wear-resistant HVOF WC-Co coatings, dry film lubricants and fundamental models for modelling of fretting contacts. Shipway has also been a significant contributor to industry, particularly through his collaboration with Rolls-Royce in aerospace and submarine sectors.
In addition to his research, Shipway has played a key role in tribological education. He co-authored the updated edition of Tribology: Friction and Wear of Engineering Materials, a widely cited textbook, and has supervised over 50 PhD students, many of whom continue to work in tribology.
