The Institution of Mechanical Engineers awarded Warrant Officer Class 2 Simon King this year’s prize for the best contribution to engineering by a non-commissioned officer in the Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.
WO2 King, as lead instructor, planned, managed and developed vehicle mechanic training for over 500 apprentice engineers.
“Warrant Officer King’s leadership, engineering intelligence, communication skills and second order analysis have been the basis of his success. He has naturally risen to the top of his department and has managed the business as usual as well as leading the way with pushing for continual improvement in engineering practices,” said Major Dan Finner who proposed WO2 King for the award.
WO2 King has been working as Technical Training Instructor at MOD Lyneham and is about to take over a vehicle workshop at Yeovilton, managing a range of equipment and 29 soldiers.
“It is a massive achievement and it was an honour to be recommended for this award. I am really proud – it shows that hard work pays off,” said WO2 King.
The Institution launched the IMechE Award for Best REME SNCO in 2013.

The award was launched as it was recognised that there were several engineering awards for REME units and officers in the field force but no formal recognition of the engineering achievements of REME Non Commissioned Officers (NCOs) and Craftsmen (Cfn).
The relationship between the IMechE and the REME is a strong one with a well-developed path for individuals of all ranks to achieve professional registration.
