The Midland Region of the IMechE ran a STEM stand on Sunday 12 June at the air show held at RAF Cosford which is one of the largest in the UK.
The annual show was cancelled for the last two years owing to the Covid19 restrictions but came back to full strength again this year, selling the 50,000 tickets weeks before the event.
On the stand they ran two activities for children – a glider challenge and a hydraulic arm challenge. Both events were extremely popular attracting over 350 children (plus more than a few adults!) to the glider challenge and around 250 for the hydraulic arm. There was also interaction with many more children and adults with the many other displays there were on show.
Chair of Midland Region, Kevin Blacktop, commented, “This has been a great show and we have been able to get the message of engineering across to a high number of people. The children have had a fun time – which was our primary intent.”
This is the fourth year that the Midland Region have run a stand in the STEM hangers at Cosford and each year they have arranged different engineering challenges for the children.
Education Officer for the Midland Region and stand organiser said, “This has been one of the best, and busiest, stands we have had over the many years we have been running STEM activities at shows. We have had a fantastic group of volunteers from the Region who have worked tirelessly from 7:00am to 7:00pm to ensure all the children have a great time.”
