Jürgen Weber, Professor of Fluid-Mechatronic Systems, Department of Engineering, Technische Universität Dresden (Germany) was awarded the 2022 Joseph Bramah Medal “in recognition of outstanding contributions to research, development and education in the field of fluid power and mechatronics”.

The Joseph Bramah Medal 2022 was awarded to Jürgen Weber, by the Mechatronics, Informatics and Control Group, which is ‘Awarded for outstanding achievement tending to advance the science of mechanical engineering, particularly in the field of hydraulic engineering’.

2023 Joseph Bramah Medal nominations are open, please submit your nominations by 18 March 2024.

Dr Ing Jürgen Weber was appointed university professor and chair of Fluid-Mechatronic System Technology at TU Dresden in 2010. Since 2018 he has been the director of the Institute of Fluid Power and Mechatronic Engineering. Professor Weber studied mechanical engineering at TU Dresden, and successfully finished his doctorate in 1991.

Until 1997, he was the active senior engineer and the former chair of Hydraulics and Pneumatics. This was followed by an approximately 13-year industrial phase. He was active in various positions at the R&D department of the agricultural and construction machinery manufacturer CNH. Besides his role as Head of the Department Hydraulics and design manager for mobile and tracked excavators, starting in 2002, he took on responsibility for the hydraulics in construction machinery at CNH worldwide.

From 2006 onward, he was the global head of architecture for hydraulic drive and control systems, system integration and advanced development of CNH construction machinery.

Dr Ing Jürgen Weber is Chair of the Global Fluid Power Society, a network of leading fluid power research organizations worldwide, both academic and industrial.

Prof Weber leads research into these important topics in fluid power:

• physical-technical fundamentals/fluids

• hydraulic components

• stationary hydraulic systems

• mobile hydraulic systems

• pneumatic components

• systems and valve actuators/solenoids

He collaborates closely with companies in research and teaching – both manufacturers and the users of fluid power components and systems. His institute offers students a scientific education of the fundamental basics as well as important areas of application, and is one of the largest educators of students at Masters and PhD level in fluid power in Europe.

Prof Weber has published over 250 papers in the field in the past 10 years.

The Mechatronics, Informatics and Control Group (MICG) is concerned with the application of information and computer technology in mechanical engineering.
