IMechE launches new strategy to become global, inclusive engineering community

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers has launched a new strategy to achieve our vision of transforming IMechE into a “global, inclusive and digitally enabled engineering community” to deliver our mission of improving the world through engineering.

Launched by our new President Giles Hartill in his presidential address in Birdcage Walk, the strategy aims to achieve our two strategic goals of supporting and developing our members and maximising their positive impact.

Giles Hartill said in his address:

“Having a clear strategy is core to any organisation’s success.  We are going to redefine what a Professional Engineering Institution is. Technicians and engineers will change the world, like they have done ever since they existed. We want you to be the best technician or engineer you can be, and we are here to help and support you."

To meet our goals, the strategy envisages improving our member accreditation process and recognition schemes, making them inclusive and a leading standard, relevant to the modern, global world.

As part of our ambition to provide life-long learning, we are aiming to provide personalised content and services to support technicians and engineers throughout their careers.

For the strategy to be a success and meet our goals, we must become “Digital First”. The pandemic brought a huge change in focus and enabled global attendance to many of our events. We now want to deliver all our services in a digitally enabled way to support our global ambitions.

Giles called for feedback from members on the strategy which he said would evolve to meet the Institution’s needs.

“We have much work to do to continue engaging and consulting on the strategy far and wide, as well as ensuring that we align our organisation and business needs."
