A technical visit to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Baggage Management was held on 30 June 2022.
The visit was co-organised by The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Malaysia Branch and The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) to understand the systems and technology used by the Malaysian Airport terminals to continuously load and unload baggage. The participants had the opportunity to witness the complexities involved in the transfer of baggage within the airport, to and from various airlines for various destinations.
The KLIA Airport Management Centre’s general manager of engineering, Ir. Azman Yusuf, together with his engineering team from Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 presented extensively the automated process flow of baggage and the use of various conveyor systems required during check-in, departure as well as in-transit. In order to cater for both terminals, it requires the organisation to look into various engineering sub-divisions headed by the general manager, such as engineering management, engineering aerodrome and electrical engineering and the use of a complex screening and sorting system.
The maintenance strategy was also presented to the guests. It was highlighted on the importance of strict scheduled maintenance and spare parts readiness for rectification works, to ensure that the airport operations are well coordinated and downtime due to engineering works is at a minimum.
In total, 20 members from IMechE Malaysia and IEM attended the visit. They have benefited from the extensive exposure on learning about the complexities of the airport baggage management. The visit ended with the exchange of gifts between Chair of IMechE Malaysia, Ir. Dr. Aidil Chee Tahir and Ir. Azman Yusuf.
