IMechE Pakistan Speaks Out for Engineering - latest heats

Two heats for the Pakistan Speak Out for Engineering competition took place recently - one local and one industrial.

SOfE Local 2019 at IMechE UET Taxila Chapter

The highly anticipated event of IMechE UET Taxila chapter, Speak Out for Engineering (SOfE) Local 2019 was held at the Mechanical Department UET Taxila on 16 December. , a competition that challenges young engineers to hone their presentation skills in front of a panel of technical experts and presentation specialists. Students from all around UET were invited to participate in this competition.

The organising committee worked around the clock tirelessly to make sure that the event took place successfully. All the judges were warmly welcomed by our hosting panel, Mr. Umer Sohail and Miss Mahnoor Fatima.

The Judges

The judging panel comprised:

  • Mr. Saffi Ghauri, Toast Master Club Islamabad
  • Mr. Muhammad Tahir, Toast Master Club Islamabad
  • Mr. Aslam Khatak DG HMC
  • Dr. Waqar, MED UET Taxila
  • Mr. Hassan Naziruddin Ansari Honorary Treasurer IMechE Pakistan.

The Competitors

Seven presenters took part in the event:br/>

  • Mr Anas Raza - "Development of indigenous condition monitoring system (ICMS)"
  • Mr Ali Asghar - "Adaption suspension system using magneto-rheological fluids"
  • Mr Talha Tanveer - "Control and monitoring of steam power plant using PLC and IOT"
  • Mr Nouman Satti - "Water level sensors"
  • Mr Umer Rana - "Skateboard, hoverboard or flying board"
  • Mr Samiullah - "Design of variable volume flowmeter"
  • Mr Hassan Khalid - "Insulin pumps".

Mr Owias Azhar recited the Holy Verses of the Quran. Every judge was introduced by the hosting panel. Mr Saffi was invited to deliver a speech, who appreciated SOfE Local and IMechE UET Taxila. He shared his experience

Each participant was allowed 10 minutes for their presentation followed by five minutes for Q & A session from the judging panel.

First presenter, Mr. Anas Raza, masterfully showed how he worked on his project “Development of ICMS”. Mr Ali Asghar excited the audience with his project while Mr Talha Tanveer aptly presented his final year project. Mr. Nouman Satti awed the audience with the idea about his project “Water level sensors”. Mr Umer Rana then presented his innovative idea about hoverboards. Mr. Samiullah discovered the problem statement about designing a flowmeter with its concept and applications. The last presenter, Mr Hassan Khalid presented his idea about insulin pumps along with their application and effective use.

Dr. Waqa one of the judges, was invited to stage to share his thoughts with the audience. He talked about the importance of marketing and presentation skills and how to present an idea or project in the market so that people can understand its importance and reliability in a better way.

Each judge admitted that the competition was getting tougher and tougher by the year.

The Results

The final standings were declared as:

  • Winner: Mr Ali Asghar
  • Runner-up: Mr Samiullah
  • 2nd Runner-up: Mr Nouman Satti.

Mr Saffi Ghauri presented trophies to winners while Dr. Waqar presented the certificates of participation and appreciation to each participant. Mr Nasiruddin Ansari was invited to present awards to judges; he also shared his thoughts on the event. He congratulated every participant and winner for their remarkable performance and shared some invaluable advice on presentation skills. This acted as a great source of inspiration and learning for the participants, audience and organisers. They also talked about why such kinds of events are necessary for young engineers.

The judges thanked the organisers for doing a great job of conducting an event of this stature so smoothly. The event ended with Mr Balaj Hassan conducting a closing ceremony at MED.

Speak Out for Engineering - South Pakistan 2020

Speak Out for Engineering (SOFE) Industrial Heat at the HUB Power Plant, Pakistan

The South Pakistan Region conducted the Speak Out for Engineering (SOFE) Industrial Heat at the HUB Power Plant, Pakistan on 13 February 2020.

The competition was hosted by Muhammad Saif, management trainee at Hub Power Services Limited and overseen by Umar Shehryar Subzwari, Assistant Manager Mechanical. Dr Mohammed Uneeb , Vice Chair IMechE Pakistan, and Farrukh Ali Khan, South Chair IMechE Pakistan were the chief guests for the competition.

The Judges

The judges for the day were - Ahmed Aftab, Asim Rashid, Shahzad Ahsan, Najam Rizvi and Mr. Saad, a mixture of eminent, toastmasters, experienced judges to assess each participant’s skill to communicate subjects of mechanical engineering effectively.

The Competitors

Seven competitors, with varied experience, gave presentations. The presentations covered a diverse range of topics and complexity from the engineering world; each presentation reflected the individual’s approach to their subject and technique of capturing the audience’s attention. All presentations were of high standard and if was difficult to figure out the clear winner.

The Results

  • Winner: Uzair Jamil - "Turbine Heater Tube Failure Issue’’
  • Runner- up: Faisal Dilbagh
  • Third place: Muhammad Hassan.

The winners will now go ahead an compete in the South region heat for IMechE Pakistan against the winners from academia.

Our Chief Guest Dr Mohammed Uneeb addressed the audience highlighting the importance of communication for engineers to present the complex ideas in an easy to understand manner and convince others. The competition was concluded with a photo session, followed by refreshments.
