Institution news
The engineers from a variety of different sectors representing companies that included Belcan, Babcock Marine – Rosyth and Clyde sites, INEOS, Technip FMC, the University of Strathclyde and The Weir Group.
In a break with tradition, the organising committee decided not to have a comedian after dinner and had two guest speakers instead, which allowed more time for attendees to chat and network. Professor Juergen Maier, CEO of Siemens UK, encouraged the attendees to embrace the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Dr. Colin Brown, IMechE CEO, who travelled up from London, urged attendees to get involved and engage even more with their Institution.
Companies hosting tables for the first time this year included, Wabtec Rail Scotland, Novosound, The University of Edinburgh and Leyton. Due to the generous sponsorship of companies in attendance, 24 undergraduate students were able to attend this prestigious event free of charge. This provided them with a fantastic opportunity to network with some great employers, committee members and recent graduates.
Iain MacDonald CEng FIMechE, O&P Integrity Manager at INEOS commented after the event,
"The INEOS Engineers thoroughly enjoyed the IMechE dinner this year and we were also delighted to contribute towards supporting the University Undergraduate tables. The change of venue and format was good, Juergen Maier and Colin Brown were good professional speakers and with more time allocated to networking following the meal, it all contributed towards a very positive and enjoyable evening".
Lauren Youd CEng MIMechE based at Weirs did a fantastic job in her first year as the Dinner Secretary. She said,
"Arranging such a large event was challenging. However, seeing how much everyone enjoyed the night made it a really rewarding experience. I’m glad it all came together as planned and that we have received such positive feedback."
The Scottish Region Committee would like to extend their thanks to Lauren, the members of the Dinner Planning Committee and all the companies who supported the 2019 event. Plans are underway for the 2020 event and details will be posted on the website very soon.
