India Branch delivers two successful industrial visits in New Delhi

The railway and aviation events were well attended by young members from two universities in India

Industrial Visit to Jet Engine Overhaul Facility, Air India, New Delhi on 26 Nov 2016

The visit was led by Amit Ramteke, Secretary of the IMechE India Railway Division and Anshul Singla, Southern Asia Regional Young Member Representative.

The visit was well attended by third and final year mechanical engineering students from SRM University, Ghaziabad and ITS Engineering  College, Noida.

The visit comprised of an overview presentation of aircraft jet engines followed by a walk through the overhaul and also the engine test facility,

Mr. Varughese, General Manager (Engineering) of the facility and his team took their valuable time out to support this learning for young and practicing mechanical engineers.

The visit was an eye-opener for the visiting IMechE group as none within the group had seen an aircraft jet engine fully disassembled before. The group saw both the CFM56 high bypass ratio turbo fan engine and the JT8D engines, in different stages of overhaul, assembly and testing.

Industrial Visit to  Diesel Locomotive Maintenance Shed, Northern Railway, Tughlakabad, New Delhi on 17 Dec 2016

Like the November visit, this visit was led by Amit Ramteke, Secretary of the IMechE India Railway Division and Anshul Singla, Southern Asia Regional Young Member Representative.

The visit was attended by second and third year mechanical engineering students from SRM University,Ghaziabad.

The visit comprised of an overview presentation of railway diesel locomotive’s location of apparatus and a good discussion on the application of mechanical engineering principles in railway rolling stock design including diesel engines, propulsion control, vehicle dynamics.

This was followed by a walk through the locomotive maintenance shed gaining an understanding of the shed layout for the various maintenance schedules undertaken in the shed. The students made use of the opportunity to have a closer look at a locomotive  diesel engine, locomotive cab, bogies etc. The tour included a visit to the bogie repair shop and also to the driver’s motion simulator training centre.

Mr.Aqeel Ahmed Khan, Divisional Mechanical Engineer (Diesel) of the shed team took his valuable time out to support the IMechE visit.
