The Institution's International Strategy Board is pleased to announce the winners of the Volunteer Award for Meritorious Service 2019 - Yaw Long Chua and Nic Coulthard.
Yaw Long Chua
Volunteering experience

- Project Mentor for the IMechE UNITEN STEM Outreach Project funded by the IMechE Schools and Clubs Engineering Challenge Fund Awards (2018-2019)
Yaw Long Chua passionately serves and upholds the good name of IMechE as a dedicated IMechE volunteer. Holding his current position as the SEAR YMS representative, he has taken the initiative to reach out to the Young Members of Malaysia, Singapore or Brunei branch to ensure that all Young Members in the SEAR region have sufficient support for their activities.
Prior to his tenure as the SEAR Young Members Representative, he demonstrated his selflessness during his tenure as the Academic Liaison Officer of the IMechE UNITEN Malaysia Student Chapter, willingly sacrificing his time and effort in guiding and grooming his students to be a better person, not only for student members in UNITEN, but also other universities by volunteering as guest speaker and also training other student chapters in providing STEM outreach workshops. Additionally, his persistence in supporting other IMechE members by motivating in self-development by means of volunteering in various organisations including IMechE to pick up relevant soft skills. His selflessness and his work ethic makes him a great role model for other IMechE members.
Nic Coulthard

Since joining the Victorian Panel in 2016, Nic has worked tirelessly to promote the IMechE, deliver value to members and support the next generation of engineers.
As Panel Secretary, he promoted one of the IMechE’s most active overseas groups by advertising over 10 events each year , represented the panel in discussions with the State Government, increased networking for members by forging links with kindred institutions and boosted attendance at events by trialling a new registration process. As Australian/Oceania Region News Bulletin Editor, Nic was a regular contributor covered the presentation of an IMechE Engineering Heritage Award and presented over a 25% increase in readership when the bulletin was expanded to members in New Zealand.
As a PRI Assessor and Independent Mentor, Nic has an ongoing passion for transferring his skills, enthusiasm and experience. During his first two years in these roles, he has participated in several PRIs, has successfully guided one individual from career uncertainty to CEng status and is currently assisting a PhD candidate through the IMechE Supported Registration Scheme.
Over the next few years, Nic plans to continue mentoring and assessing while remaining an active member of the Victorian Panels it faces the risks and opportunities of a state based registration scheme for Engineers.
About the Awards
The Award is made in recognition of outstanding services to the Institution’s international network which cannot be recognised in the local region.
A maximum of two awards per year can be made subject to their being nominations of sufficient merit.
All active volunteer members of the Institution living outside of the UK are eligible to make a nomination or to be nominated for the Award. The nomination must also be sponsored by the Regional Chair. The winner of the award is decided by the ISB Chair, advised by the International Strategy Board.
