World-class CarMaker developer joins the UK Formula Student competition and offers FS teams licenses for virtual vehicle testing.

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers is delighted to welcome IPG Automotive as a partner of the UK Formula Student competition for the 2021-2022 season.

A global leader in virtual test-driving technology, IPG Automotive are developers of the innovative CarMaker simulation software platform, which is specifically developed for automotive virtual testing applications. It allows vehicle manufacturers to test and optimise their vehicle systems either independently or as whole, with modelling covering all aspects of a vehicle including powertrain, ADAS systems, brakes, suspension and much more

CarMaker 9.0 Licenses for teams

All Formula Student teams in Class 1, Concept Class and FS-AI can request access to CarMarker to simulate and test all aspects of their cars ahead of the forthcoming competition next summer. The license grants teams access to a growing repository of pre-built models, parameters and test environments specific to the Dynamic events of the Formula Student competition so that teams can get started straight away, with more planned for the near future.

“We want people to come out of university with a thorough appreciation of the commercial-grade tools for simulation, not just their abbreviations,” explained Will Snyder, Sales Engineer at IPG Automotive and a veteran of Formula Student with Team Bath Racing in 2012.

“We believe that by making a powerful and accessible tool available that students will be able to identify improvements quickly and, more importantly, to better understand how to use and get the most out of simulation software when they begin working in industry,” he added.

CarMaker for ADAS developments
Taking testing into the virtual world will also enable teams to get useful data on their work, regardless of other factors, such as restrictions on public gatherings, access to a suitable test area, budget restraints or a lack of a finished vehicle for on-track testing.

The two-year partnership means that teams who start this year can start to build up a library of bespoke models and data based on their 2021 car, which will prove invaluable when work begins for the 2022 competition.

To get started with CarMaker and join teams like Team Bath Racing, Queen’s Formula Student and UoN Formula Student who are already benefitting from the software, simply complete a registration form.
