Major car manufacturers including Jaguar Land Rover have embraced “cutting-edge” connectivity and intelligent mobility during CES 2018, the technology show in Las Vegas.

Smart-technology company Qualcomm, which is exhibiting at the pre-eminent annual trade show, announced that the UK car company will use its Snapdragon platforms to power 4G, wi-fi and Bluetooth connectivity, integrated navigation and on-board entertainment services on its future vehicles.

China’s largest electric vehicle manufacturer BYD will also introduce the platforms in 2019 models, while Honda displayed its 2018 Accord with the technology built in at CES.

The platforms offer a host of “infotainment” benefits, said Qualcomm. Integrated with sensors and cameras, the platforms offer drivers assistance and monitor the surroundings to ensure passengers’ safety. Last week, an expert told Professional Engineering that smart and connected technologies are a “stepping stone” towards widespread use of autonomous vehicles.

With growing demand for personalised experiences in the automotive sector and elsewhere, the technology also includes high bandwidth for film- and music-streaming and other applications on multiple internal displays.

“We pride ourselves on designing and developing state-of-the-art solutions that support next-generation user experiences, while helping accelerate the future of automotive innovation,” said Nakul Duggal, vice-president at Qualcomm.

“As a technology leader in the automotive industry, Qualcomm Technologies is well-positioned to offer cutting-edge automotive connectivity and intelligent computing solutions to help propel the industry forward.”
